RE: Entrepreneur & Investor Exchange
ISSUE: Speech
DATE: September 13, 2005
_________________________________________________________________________________
No one in the 21st Century expects to practice a successful profession, conduct
a profitable business, or attract adequate financing by merely affixing a
shingle to the door. Even conventional advertising often fails to make a
sufficient dent, especially in certain industries, like those industries in
which many of you operate. Heck, were that not the case, Fritz and his
colleagues might have expended the effort devoted to this get-together on
something far less arduous.
Networking takes many forms, but, to my mind,
participation in, and (if you will) sponsorship of, associations like the E&I
Exchange represent the pinnacle of that important practice. I’ll offer my own
circumstances as an example: Like most of you, I eagerly offer assistance to a
handful of favored charities and I serve on the board of my house of worship. I
meet many interesting individuals as I engage in such endeavors and as I attend
fund raisers. Some of these fellow participants certainly offer the potential to
expand my practice, and from time to time I’ll field a call from one such person
seeking to retain me. However, I myself take an especially conservative tack
within that milieu. I never bring a business card to any nonprofit event and,
within the bounds of decorum, I deflect conversation that ties to personal
commercial betterment. You see, I don’t want to leave anyone with a
misimpression of my motives, and I fear, perhaps unduly, some degradation of
reputation.
In a continuing-contact circumstance, like board
membership, people will of course learn who you are and whether you have
something to offer them. But I believe those circumstances require behavior
deferential to the charitable purpose, notwithstanding the business
opportunities that might fall away in the absence of an affirmative pursuit.
This can of course be achieved without the mind-set I adopt, but we have varying
abilities to walk the narrow line of mixing business with human duty in a
sincere manner that the listener will recognize as sincere.
Now the commercial, but this time coming from a
sponsor, not from a paid endorser: The E&I Exchange presents an ongoing
opportunity orchestrated to, and promoting of, business networking. Those
“regulars” in the room will, I would bet, support my view that each meeting has
presented interesting, practical information, pleasant conversation, and, for
that matter, tasty food. I have attended, and I continue to attend, other forums
dedicated to similar activities. The E&I Exchange impresses me as exceptionally
professional and remarkably friendly. If you believe in the importance of
networking, and in the need to remain abreast of industry developments, this is
the type of conference you should attend and this is the type of forum you might
consider sponsoring.
